Personally sentenced and invalid occupations are almost an individualism that runs counter to society as uselessness is a metaphor for the status of individuals being isolated and ignored. In this project, the unified, symbolized occupation, which also has a mystery similar to religious worship, is aimed to criticize the operation of the system and its mechanism. The ‘unknown’ and ‘undefined’ concepts of the symbol represent personal uncertainty. In a personal, indefinable, religious-like atmosphere, I seek out the silent and powerless resistance of individuals to society, as well as the tension in between.

I occupied five places in Shanghai by setting flags with the symbol inspired by the replacement glyph (.notdef) in OpenType, which is for content that cannot be displayed, and painted them with the serial number on the sties' walls. Link these five places on a map of Shanghai, and you will get the symbol.

I designed and printed a dozen pamphlets containing 5 locations and other information about the project. As originally planned, I was to send them to random people. However, a man from the city management bureau found me and wanted to take my pamphlets away. I refused and clearly stated that they are not of commercial use while still not letting me go. Then we had a fierce dispute, and I was injured consequently. Police officers happened to be nearby, and I reported the man because of his use of violence. Finally, the police took us to the police station, and the man and his supervisor apologized to
