Farewell
Jan 2020

Burning joss paper (incense paper) is a traditional Chinese practice that sends blessings to the deceased. It is common to burn them at funerals, and people believe that the message will be passed to the departed in the spirit world through the smoke.

It is somehow a way to commune with someone across time and space. Focused on more personal aspects than material offerings commonly appeared on ordinary incense paper, I designed a joss paper with the traditional ones as references. I burned them all on the new year’s day as for a farewell to the past.

14 sheets, joss paper, metalic paint, printed on joss paper, 300*300mm / 260*185mm

Occupy
Oct-Dec 2019
Personally sentenced and invalid occupations are almost an individualism that runs counter to society, as uselessness is a metaphor for the status of individuals being isolated and ignored. In this project, the unified, symbolized occupation, which also has a mystery similar to religious worship, is aimed to criticize the operation of the system and its mechanism. The ‘unknown’ and ‘undefined’ concepts of the symbol represent personal uncertainty. In a personal, indefinable, religious-like atmosphere, I seek out the silent and powerless resistance of individuals to society, as well as the tension in between.
